Fauna

Fauna, as well as flora, is extremely varied. Many of the species in the Buila-Vânturariţa Massif are protected by international conventions that Romania has also ratified (the Convention of Berna, Convention of Bonn, Convention of CITES, the Directives on Habitats and Birds).

The invertebrates in the Buila-Vânturariţa Massive are: insects (Ephemeroptera - Bactis, Rhithrogena, Plecopteres - Isoperla, Chloroperla, Nemoura, Trichopteres -Rhycophila, Coleopteres - Carabus violaceus, C. intricatus, C. monilis, C. coriaceus, Abax parallelepipedus, Rosalia alpina, Lucanus cervus, Lepidoptera - Vanessa io, V. atalanta, Lycaena dispar.
- Molusca (Helix pomatia, Cepaea sp.).

Vertebrates are also well represented:

  • Fish - trout (Salmo trutta fario), grayling (Thymallus thymallus), Mediterranean barbel (Barbus meridionalis), European bullhead (Cottus gobio);
  • Amphibians – fire salamander (Salamandra salamandra),alpine newt (Triturus alpestris), yellow-bellied toad (Bombina variegata), (Rana temporaria) and common toad (Bufo bufo).
  • Reptiles – European green lizard (Lacerta viridis), wall lizard (Podarcis muralis), smooth snake (Coronella austriaca), common European viper (Vipera berus).

  • Birds – red kite (Milvus milvus), short-toed eagle (Circaetus gallicus), wall creeper (Tychodroma muralia), lesser spotted eagle (Aquila pomarina), red footed falcon (Falco vespertinus), European nightjar (Caprimulgus europaeus), rock bunting (Emberiza cia), pied wheatear (Oenanthe pleschanka), isabelline wheatear (Oenanthe isabellina), three-toed woodpecker (Picoides tridactylus), middle spotted woodpecker (Dendrocopus medius), Eurasian eagle owl (Bubo bubo), white wagtail (Motacilla alba), capercaillie (Tetrao urogalus);

  • Mammals: greater horseshoe bat (Rhinolophus ferrumequinum), lesser horseshoe bat (R. hipposideros), greater mouse-eared bat (Myotis myotis), lesser mouse-eared bat (M. blythi), pond bat (M. dasycneme), long-fingered bat (M. capaccinii), Geoffrey’s bat (M. emarginatus), the barbastrelle (Barbastella barbastellus), western barbastrelle (Miniopterus schreibersi), bear (Ursus arctos), lynx (Lynx lynx), wolf (Canis lupus), chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra), pine marten (Martes martes), forest marten (Martes foina), Eurasian badger (Meles meles), red deer (Cervus elaphus).
